Aside from sweetener differences pointed out here, I believe the difference is in marketing. The gist of it is: Diet coke is marketed towards the female demographic whereas "Coke ZERO" is a more masculine. Perhaps similar to why there is 'Lite beer' vs. 'Diet Beer'.
